The island of Tilos is just one of the dozens of hidden gems in the Aegean that can be found off the beaten path. It can easily be accessed from mainland Greece and neighbouring Rhodes by sea throughout the peak holiday months. Receiving few visitors, the island has been able to retain an age-old charm and remains untainted by the tourism trade and hoards of summer travellers. There is an abundance of ancient sites to visit and traces of some of the first inhabitants to the island that date as far back as the stone age. One of the most spectacular archaeological sites is found in the Chalkadio cave where paleontologists discovered fossils of prehistoric dwarf elephants and deer, which can still be seen today. The uniqueness of this find has resulted in the island sometimes being referred to as the ''Islands of Elephants''. Apart from the amazing ancient remains, Tilos has quaint villages and pretty pebble beaches to relax on after your expeditions exploring the island.
