Tinos is an island north of Poros and you may be surprised how busy and built up the island looks at its main port. This is because Tinos' principal town is host to an annual pilgrimage in August of devout Greek Orthodox visitors celebrating “Tis Panayia's” (or Virgin Mary's Saint Day). Pilgrims make their way up to the Church visible from the port to worship at its age old icon famed for its miracles. Some choose to do the path up to the holy place on their knees, quite a feat considering the church is located at the top of a hill. In addition to the religious significance the island has some of the prettiest authentic villages in the Cyclades and it's coastline is still protected from the masses of tourists that tend to frequent the larger Greek islands. For those wanting a back to basics holiday, then Tinos is definitely a place to do little, if relax and let the rest of the world pass by.
